Jewelry designer on the rise | Une créatrice de bijoux en pleine ascension

Awa Kamara is a young entrepreneur of Sierra Leonan descent who launched, a year ago,  awakamara.com, a website showcasing her work as a jewelry designer. She shares with us the journey that led to one of the most exciting moments of her career.

When did you start thinking about putting out your own jewelry line?
I really started thinking about having my own jewelry line at the end of 2008. My background is in fashion design, and I always had a love for jewelry. I remember when I was younger, I was always very fascinated with queens and goddesses and how women could express themselves through jewelry and through symbols. They were really my inspiration.

 And you launched, a year ago, your website: awakamara.com! Was it challenging?
It was challenging but I wanted to do it so I contacted all my friends and said: listen this is my situation, I want to make this happen can you help me out? Really everybody was very supportive and that’s really how it came together. I was really knocking on doors saying: “Hello, I’m here help me”

Tell us about the type of jewelry you are making!
My jewelry is African-inspired. It definitely has my signature. I’m African but I grew up in Austria so there is also some European conservative style in there. Now I live in New York, so there is also a New York touch, some spice here and there. The colors are bright, and I use African beads, camel bone, coconut shell, hypoallergenic 14K gold-filled metal, silver, sea shell, recycled glass beads…

What will be your next move?
I really want to get the word out about the jewelry line and the website:  awakamara.com but I’m also working on the side partnering with 2 non-profit organizations working in Sierra Leone in different areas. I will be donating money from each sale to Shine on Sierra Leone, and the New Hope Movement.

Awa Kamara est une jeune femme entrepreneur d’origine Sierra Léonaise qui a lancé, il y a à peine un an, awakamara.com, un site internet exposant ses talents de créatrice de bijoux. Elle partage avec nous le chemin qui l’a conduite à l’un des moments les plus passionnants de sa carrière.

Quand avez-vous commencé à penser à créer  votre propre ligne de bijoux?
J’ai vraiment commencé à penser à avoir ma propre ligne de bijoux à la fin 2008. J’ai eu une formation de créatrice de mode, et j’ai toujours adoré les bijoux. Je me souviens quand j’étais plus jeune, j’étais toujours très fascinée par les reines et les déesses et comment les femmes pouvaient s’exprimer avec des bijoux et à travers des symboles. Elles étaient ma réelle source d’inspiration.

Et vous venez de lancer votre site internet : awakamara.com! C’était difficile?
Ça a été difficile, mais je voulais le faire. J’ai donc contacté tous mes amis et je leur ai dit: écoutez, voici ce que j’ai la ferme intention de faire, pouvez-vous m’aider à le concrétiser? Et là, j’ai vraiment eu le soutien de tout le monde et c’est ainsi que tout a commencé. J’ai vraiment eu à frapper aux portes en disant: «bonjour, je suis là aidez-moi.»

Parlez-nous du type de bijoux que vous créez!
Mes bijoux sont d’inspiration africaine. Ils portent ma signature. Je suis africaine, mais j’ai grandi en Autriche et de ce fait il y a  aussi un peu de style traditionnel européen là-dedans. Maintenant  je vis à New York, donc il y a aussi une touche new-yorkaise, et un peu de piquant çà et là.  Les couleurs sont vives, et j’utilise des perles africaines, des os de chameaux, de la noix de coco, du métal « doublé or » 14 carats hypoallergénique, de l’argent, des coquillages, des perles de verre recyclé …

Quelle sera votre prochaine étape?
Je veux vraiment passer le mot sur la ligne de bijoux et le site internet : awakamara.com, mais je travaille aussi en partenariat avec deux organisations à but non lucratif oeuvrant en Sierra Leone dans différents domaines. Je vais donner de l’argent, sur chaque vente, à ces deux organisations, « Shine on Sierra Leone » et « New Hope Movement ».
