David Tlale Fall 2012 Collection

South African designer David Tlale presented this week his Fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection titled “Glam Intersection” at the South African Consulate in New York. For this particular collection, he opted for the use of gold mutating to shades and accents of Sun-rise-Yellow and natural browns to tell his story.

Evidence, A Dance Company 8th Annual Gala

Evidence, A Dance Company hosted its 8th Annual Gala on Monday 13, 2012, at New York’s Manhattan Center. The gala presented Evidence’s first ever performance of Gatekeepers, a powerful modern dance work blending Native American myth and African traditions, and choreographed by Evidence’s founder and artistic director Ronald K. Brown. Actor Norm Lewis, star of the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess” hosted the annual gala, joined by actress Phylicia Rashad of “the Cosby Show”; Tony Award winning actress LaChanze of “The Help”; actress Lisa Nicole Wilkerson of “Porgy and Bess”; and Andrea and Maurice Dubois, WCBS-TV news anchor, among others. Zang Toi Fall 2012 Collection

Zang Toi, known for his classic and timeless aesthetic and his modern twist on sophisticated elegance, celebrates true Hollywood glamour this season. After featuring a more exotic palate last season, the designer cleaned the canvas and features winter white and classic blacks with pops of decadent ruby hues.

The 2012 Athena Film Festival Awards

The 2012 Athena Film Festival kicked off on Thursday, February 9, 2012 with an award ceremony recognizing women for their leadership and creative accomplishments. Dee Rees, writer and director of Pariah and Nekisa Cooper, producer of Pariah were honored for their impact as emerging filmmakers. The festival continues until February 12 and will feature 30 films and panels with actors, directors, producers, writers and other members of the film community on the Barnard campus in Morningside Heights.

Macy’s Black History Month Reception

Macy’s and the Romare Bearden Foundation hosted on February 9, 2012, a reception celebrating the 100th birthday of one of America’s foremost 20th Century artists, Romare Bearde. The event included a satellite exhibit of Romare Bearden’s artwork and a performance of The New Cookers. Susan Taylor who is the founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement was among the guests.

Super Bowl XLVI Champions New York Giants Parade

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg hosted a ticker-tape parade in honor of the Super Bowl XLVI Champions New York Giants on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012. The parade was followed by a ceremony at City Hall Plaza, at which the Mayor presented the NY Giants with Keys to the City.

McDonald’s Faces of Black History Awards

As a kick-off to Black History Month, McDonald’s celebrated last week the achievements of Black Media Legends and the unveiling of the 2012 Faces of Black History poster at the Plaza Hotel. Faces of Black History was proudly created to salute and honor Black History makers, from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks to present day heroes. This year’s honorees include Jeff Burns Jr., Alkelee Daughtry, Preston Davis, Elise Finch, Nicole Johnson, Jennifer Jordan, Tom Joyner, Stephen G. Lucas, Dean Meminger, Gil Noble, Carole Owens, Miatta Haj Smith, Elinor Tatum, Ann Tripp, and William J. Wright.

Mayor Bloomberg’s Black History Month Reception

Mayor Bloomberg hosted a reception in honor of Black History Month on February 1, 2012 at Gracie Mansion. Members of the Tuskegee Airmen and the first black mayor of New York City, David N. Dinkins, were among the guests who attended the event. A certificate of recognition was presented to Ruth Joyner, Stacy Thompson, Lorraine Roach Steele, Lianne Palacios, Reginald Jordan and Kevin Cummings for their dedicated service to the city.

Rally in Harlem against President Wade

Senegalese citizens gathered in Harlem on Thursday, February 2, 2012 to protest against the validation of President Wade candidacy by the constitutional court. Abdoulaye Wade who was first elected in 2000, plans on running for a third term after changing the constitution and establishing a two-term limit. The presidential elections are scheduled to take place on February 26, 2012.

4th Annual Teer Spirit Awards

The fourth Annual Teer Spirit Awards, a ceremony acknowledging people of extraordinary vision and talent, was held last month at the National Black Theater. The honorees were Gil Noble, George Faison, Robin Bell-Stevens, Howard Dodson, Sabrina Sadler, Claudette C. Faison, Jackie Jeffries and Doug E. Fresh.

Project Enterprise Harlem Community Leadership Breakfast

Project enterprise, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support and develop entrepreneurs and small businesses in under-resourced communities in New York City held it first networking event of the year today at Settepanni, in Harlem. The community leadership breakfast was an opportunity for small business owners and corporations to discuss the high unemployment rate affecting the black community and also how small-businesses can take a more active role in creating the environment needed to make their business successful.

In the past five years, Project Enterprise has disbursed 413 loans totaling more than $2 million and has provided over 3,421 micro-entrepreneurs with business training and networking opportunities.
